 HEAL THE WORLD PROJECT

Henrietta tried to make things better in big ways and small. In the Jewish tradition, that is called tikkun olam (pronounced tee-KOON oh-LUMH), heal the world – making things better through social action and social justice. How can you heal the world and make it better? Your actions can be as simple as picking up trash and making it more beautiful. Or you can make someone’s life better by bringing meals to people who can’t leave their home or eating lunch with a student who looks lonely. Maybe, like Henrietta, you can team up with others to create a program that will solve problems at your school or in your community in a long-lasting way.  Find your own way to heal the world and we’ll post your photos and stories here on HEAL THE WORLD. Remember, every kindness counts!

Thank you, Congregation Har Shalom Kita Dalet class in Fort Collins, Colorado! From their teachers, Naomi Banta and Judy Petersen: "Our first mitzvah project was to collect money for the Food Bank for Larimer County. Every week students bring tzedakah money to class and we collect it in our tzedakah boxes. We always need two ! In December we gave the Food Bank over $200. During the month of February we had two projects going. The first was to collect small toiletries for Homeward Alliance. In this picture you can see students sorting the donations. Our community helped us donate 6 bags of toiletries to the homeless shelter! We are also saving our Tzedakah money to donate to the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.”

Thank you to these wonderful fourth graders! I hope you inspire others to #healtheworld, too. Love that the tzedakah boxes are from PJ Library. It was through a 2019 fellowship from PJ Library at the Yiddish Book Center that I received support to work on A Queen to the Rescue, the Story of Henrietta Szold, Founder of Hadassah!
